Winter Weather Tips
TIPS TO HELP PREVENT PIPES FROM FREEZING:

Open kitchen and bathroom sink cabinet doors to allow heat to circulate the pipes. The heat from the rest of the house can help keep the pipes warm.

Let at least one inside faucet drop (4 - 5 drips per minute / choose one farther away from water coming into the house from outside). Running water freezes at a slower rate than stagnant water.

Make sure the heat is left on and set to no lower than 55 degrees, however 68 or higher is best.

Heat your basement if that's an option.
MORE TIPS:

Keep your garage door closed.

Close all windows near water pipes and cover or close open-air vents. Freezing temperatures combined with wind drafts can cause pipes to freeze more frequently.

Let outdoor faucets drip. If there is an isolation shut-off valve for the outdoor faucets, shut it off and open the spigot to drain as much water from the line as possible.

Drain water sprinkler supply lines.

Disconnect all gardening hoses and store them.

Identify the location of the main water valve and the valve on your water heater in case you need to shut off in an emergency situation.

If you plan to be away from home for an extended period of time, shut off water supply valves to your washing machine.
IF A PIPE BURSTS:

Turn the water off at the main shutoff valve. Call a plumber (Halcomb Plumbing) if you can't find the broken pipe or if it's inaccessible. Don't turn the water back on until the pipe has been repaired.

Never try to thaw a pipe with an open flame or torch.

Always be careful of the potential for electric shock in and around standing water.
